What is digital TV?

Digital Television (DTV) is a new type of broadcasting technology that will transform your television viewing experience. That means better quality, more choices, and more control over your television.

Digital TV is a way of transmitting the picture and sound, which creates together a TV program, plus DTV has other integrated services like games and interactivity. It gives many advantages over the ‘analogue’ television transmission system that we have been using for nearly seventy years.

Because the information needed to create the TV program is ‘coded’ into a digital stream of ones and zeroes – like the way a computer works – the picture quality can be much better and more consistent. The digital stream takes up much less capacity in the airwaves, so that the space needed in the past for just one analogue channel can now carry five, six or seven different program. This means a much greater choice of services to watch if you are a digital viewer.

And that’s not all. Digital TV can be widescreen. Many of your favorite programs are in true widescreen on digital channels – something analogue TV cannot do properly.

Digital terrestrial television (DTTV or DTT, also known as Wireless television, or cable-free TV) is the technological evolution of broadcast television and an advancement of analog television. DTTV broadcasts land-based (terrestrial) signals. The purposes of digital terrestrial television, similar to digital versus analog in other platforms such as cable, satellite, and telecommunications, are to reduced use of spectrum and to provide more capacity than analog and provide better-quality picture and sound.
